Welcome to Year 6

There are two classes in Year 6. 6NA are taught by Miss Ahmed; 6HH are taught by Mr Hill and Mrs Train. Mrs Cann, Miss Preece and Miss Chambers work with us.
Spring Term
During the Spring term we will be focusing on the whole school topic, “Those Who Came Before Us.” This topic will have a history focus where we will learn about the Civil War. During our writing lessons, we will also be touching on WW2. We will be writing about the events of Dunkirk and using a range of sentences structures and varying language in order to build a clear picture of events in our readers minds.
We are reading “Holes” by Louis Sachar, during our DEAR Time.

As mathematicians we are focusing on applying our formal methods and understanding of number of fractions in order to read and interpret a range of tables, graphs and charts.
As Scientists this term, we will be exploring the topic of ‘Evolution and Inheritance’ to understand how living things have changed over time and to explore how animals and plants adapt to their environment.
In P.E this term:
- In Outdoor and Adventure, we are learning to use important team building and problem solving skills as well as learning to communicate effectively with each other.
- In gymnastics, we are learning to travel and jump in a variety of ways, both on the floor and using apparatus. We will be performing gymnastics sequences both individual and as parts of a group.
Autumn Term
During the Autumn half term we will be focusing on the whole school topic ‘This is me’. This will be followed by the next topic ‘My place, My Time’, which will have a Geography and History focus, including exploring Biomes that surface our Earth and the reign of King John.
In writing, we will be using the text ‘The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse,’ to support us with the use of subordination, prepositional phrases, fronted adverbials, relative clauses and figurative language to write a setting description.
We will then be using, ‘The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion , the Witch and the Wardrobe’ as our stimulus to write a narrative.
As Mathematicians this term: we will be securing our understanding of place value and the four operations before applying our mathematical knowledge to a range of reasoning questions.
As readers we will be using the text ‘The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse,’ to make predictions and inferences; and retrieve basic information from and about the text using complex comprehension questions.
Within our wider curriculum…
As Musicians this term, we will be listening, composing and preforming music from films.
As Scientists this term, we will be exploring the topic of ‘Animals including Humans’ to investigate how the circulatory system works. We will be exploring the components of the heart and blood.
As Athletes this term:
- In dance, children will combine, join and remember arange of movements to create a short dance.
- In tag rugby, children will use ball skills in various ways and link these together effectively to play a game of tag rugby
Useful information
Homework will be handed out every Friday and due back in and completed by the following Wednesday.
Home reading – it is the expectation that children read at least three times a week. These will be checked on a Wednesday and Friday.
Our PE days are Tuesdays (gymnastics) and Thursdays (OAA).
