At Hollymount School, we recognise the contribution of PE to the health and well-being of our children. We believe that an innovative, varied PE curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities have a positive influence on the concentration, attitude and academic achievement of all our children.
Our Primary School Sport’s Funding will enable us to continue and extend our provision through employing additional sports professionals, entering into more competitive sports competitions and training our staff to deliver in-house quality PE sessions.

What is the Sports Premium?
The government is providing funding of £150 million per annum for the academic years 2013/14 and 2014/15 to provide new and substantial primary school sport funding. The funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and will see money going directly to primary school headteachers to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children. Each school will receive £8,000 plus an extra £5 per pupil each year for the next two years – here at Hollymount School that will mean around £9,000 a year. The money can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools.
Purpose of the funding
Schools have to spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but have the freedom to choose how they do this.
Possible uses of the funding include:
- Hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work alongside primary teachers when teaching PE
- New or additional Change4Life sport clubs
- Paying for professional development opportunities in PE/sport
- Providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE/sport
- Running sport competitions, or increasing participation in the school games
- Buying quality assured professional development modules or material for PE/sport
- Providing places for pupils on after school sport clubs and residential visits

The Children’s View
A recent survey of children from Year 1 to 6 showed that the Sports Premium was having a positive impact on their fitness and attitudes to sport. 88% of the children surveyed said they enjoyed sport at school, with swimming being the most popular sport (liked by 100% of the children). 85% of the children enjoyed their gym lessons which are led by coaches from the City of Worcester Gymnastic Club at their facilities in Worcester. Several Hollymount children have now joined the gymnastic club as a result of their experience with school.
91% of the children felt that they enjoyed PE more and made more progress with professional coaches working alongside their class teachers and the profile of the school football and netball teams has been far greater this year. Please see our ‘Sports Teams’ page for more details of they have been getting on in recent matches.
“I really enjoy the football team. We even got to go on an amazing trip to West Brom!” OW Y4
Energy Club Prizes
Energy Club is run at lunchtimes, by Mrs Wilkins, and gives the children the opportunity to participate in organised games and activities. They earn points for attendance and participation and earn prizes at the end of each term.
On 15th April we held a special assembly to reward the children who had been to Energy Club on a regular basis throughout the Spring Term.
