Welcome to Year 1!

We are taught by Ms Lloyd and Miss Doyle with lots of help from Mrs Lees, Mrs Smith and Mrs Lloyd.

Year 1 have been enjoying looking at The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson, as a cunning mouse takes a stroll in the ‘deep dark wood’. The children made puppets, acted out the story and learnt to orally retell a shortened version of the story. They also used interesting adjectives in sentences to describe the Mouse and the Gruffalo, and made some tasty Gruffalo Crumble.

Both classes are currently reading Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert, a story which follows a group of leaves as they are blown by the wind over fields and past orchards. The children have been imagining all the different places Leaf Man might have travelled to, as ‘a Leaf Man’s got to go where the wind blows’.

The children especially enjoyed collecting leaves and making their own Leaf Man on No Pens Wednesday. They were able to describe their Leaf Man using interesting adjectives and used their Leaf Man to help retell the story. The year 1 children are also looking forward to reading other Julia Donaldson books throughout the Autumn term.
