On Wednesday 21st November, we had a morning devoted to science! Nick – our visiting scientist – held a special assembly and then we invited our parents in to take part in practical science activities.
While demonstrating science experiments in front of the school, Nick told us about the benefits and strengths of bio fuels and about 2 famous scientists: Michael Faraday and William Perkin.
In 1856, when he was 18, William Perkin was trying to make a medicine for malaria but he made a few mistakes and ended up burning the glass he had used to mix it in. While using different chemicals to clean the glass he accidentally made a purple dye. He realised that the dye could be used to make fabrics purple and ended up being a millionaire! Nick said that scientists often get things wrong, but their mistakes can sometimes help them learn new things!
Year 5 investigated:
How many drops of water will fit on a penny? How much sugar is in a can of coke? How to make a lava lamp.
