In January 2017, the year 5 children went on the annual trip to the Arete Centre, Llanrug in North Wales. They had an amazing time doing a variety of exciting activities, including climbing, canoeing, caving and gorge walking. Everyone had a great time. Below you can see and read about some of the exciting things they did.
After the trip, the children wrote recounts of their trip, a few of which you can see below.
On a cloudy, windy Tuesday morning, we woke up in a strange place. We were in Llanrug! Everyone felt over the moon because they got to start their day. The whole of year five rushed downstairs to make their lunch (just like there was an emergency!)
After that, we packed our sandwiches – I had a cheese sandwich. Then everyone had breakfast. I had cereal followed by scrambled eggs.
A short while after, we had to complete our duties – it felt like a huge challenge. I had to wash the plates. Also, my table group had to help dry up!
Subsequently, we saw who our instructor was. I hoped it was Sophie and it was. Later, everyone put their peg kit on (mine was really big, it felt like I was drowning inside it!)
Eventually, we went on the minibus and soon we arrived at the beach! I was really surprised because there were broken boats on the sand. All of the birds were squawking really loudly – like something bad had happened. We spent our time finding sea shells and seaweed.
When we finished at the beach, we get back on the mini bus and we arrived at the Gorge (waterfall). I was really nervous but I had a go. I didn’t know what was going to happen.
Everyone worked together as a team and helped each other. I was terrified because it felt like I was going to slip. We finally got back on the minibus.
On Wednesday morning, I woke up with Miss Parker in my face! I was really tired and nearly feel down the stairs. We made our sandwiches and got dressed. Shortly after, we had breakfast – I had toast with jam.
When we finally left the centre, it took us ten minutes to arrive at the rock climbing place. We all put our harnesses on and went on our adventure. I was the first one to go on so I climbed and climbed till I felt I couldn’t go any further. Next, it was Viki’s turn. She climbed quarter of the way then shouted, “I want to come down!” She repeated that four more times. Not long after, Viki shouted, “I want a wedgie!”
But then I said, “You’re nearly there, keep going!” So she did and she made it to the top. We all climbed to the very top and even over it. When we were on top, we had our lunch (the only problem was, the wind kept blowing it away!)
On a rainy, foggy Tuesday morning, we woke up in a strange place called Llanrug. We were so excited to start our adventure but first we had to make our sandwiches. When we made our sandwich we had breakfast.
Not long after breakfast, we did out duties. In the morning, table 1 had to clean the stores (it was a bit smelly!)
Sometime later, all of year 5 came down cautiously because we didn’t know what to expect. We can downstairs because we had to know which instructor would lead us for the week. We had Steve (he liked to play with a plastic gun and shoot us). That morning he told us we were going to the beach.
Our first game on the beach was called ‘Funky Seaweed’. When the game finished we looked under rocks. We were searching for the most terrifying creatures ever – the crab! We found three small crabs, one big crab and five small starfish.
After, we went back to the bus to have lunch and some hot chocolate. When we were eating Steve went to make the zip wire. After he came back we went scrambling. Nicole and I were scared so Steve told us to come to the front (it was slippery!)
We finally got to the zip wire (Nicole went first) and I went after her. I had to hold the rope and pull myself. When I was halfway across Steve and Miss Parker took a photo of me. When we finished, Steve asked us if we felt strong enough to carry his things for him – Nicole and I of course volunteered!
On Tuesday morning, I woke up then brushed my teeth. Following this I made my bed and went downstairs to prepare my sandwiches (there was a range of options and I had an apple, cake and some crisps). After that, I went back to my room to fill my water bottle up – ready for the days activities. After having breakfast, our group met with our instructor – Sophie, who explained what equipment we would need for our activities. We needed to collect our peg kit and a helmet for the Gorge. When everyone was ready, we climbed on to the minibus and set off for our first stop which was the beach. At the beach, we did a little bit of rock climbing. Unfortunately, me and Aaron got stuck in quick sand but Mr Webb was here to save the day by pulling us out!
On Tuesday morning I woke up at 5:00am. 3 minutes later I woke Robbie up and fell out of his bed! Then I woke Robert up by tickling him. Soon after, when everyone was awake we brushed our teeth and got ready. When we were back in our dorm, I accidentally set the fire alarm off – I think it work the boys up in the room above us! WE got called to make our sandwiches and have breakfast – everyone was very tired (including Mr Webb as we had woken him up at 5:30am! – Sorry).
On Thursday morning, I woke up and repeated the morning routine of making sandwiches and having breakfast. That day our activity was rockpooling. My group caught 4 different crabs and 1 star fish. Once we had caught them we had to use books to identify what they were are research some information on them. After we had finished, we were taken to a different beach. Here we ran away from the waves (Robbie kept falling and Robert tried to kick the waves away!) We got back for about 4:50pm. Later on in the evening, we had a pyjama party! We got changed ready for bed and then we visited the shop, played games, dance, sang and even did the mannequin challenge. It was a lot of fun!
